Citroën Ami – a small car as a van: Break and Service versions of the Ami 6, 8 and Super, flat-twin engine from 602 cc, gross weights from 910 to 1,185 kg

The Citroën Ami was introduced in 1961 as the Ami 6, based on the 2CV, and replaced in 1969 by the Ami 8 with reworked bodywork; Break denotes the estate version, Service the more simply equipped van version without a rear bench seat for light goods transport. The air-cooled flat-twin engine of the Ami 6 and Ami 8 came in different displacements across versions; the Ami Super, introduced in 1972, took over the flat-four engine from the Citroën GS.

The register lists 6 versions from two- and four-cylinder engines from 602 cc. Kerb weights range from 580 to 935 kg, gross vehicle weights from 910 to 1,185 kg. Widths run from 1,470 to 1,560 mm.

As the van variant of the Ami, the Break/Service served the segment of small, economical utility vehicles alongside the Citroën 2CV Fourgonnette, and in France stood for inexpensive goods transport over short distances, for example for tradespeople and retail.

Like the Vanclee micro-vans, the Ami's low gross weight sat far below anything today's EU class N1 with its 3.5-tonne ceiling actually regulates; an ordinary car licence was enough to drive it. Because every engine variant is air-cooled, there is no water pump, radiator or antifreeze to fail, but the absence of coolant-based temperature control means the valve clearances need regular manual adjustment instead.

On a used example, checks should cover corrosion on the floor pan, sills and wheel arches, the condition of the front trailing-arm suspension and its rubber elements, the sealing and condition of the air-cooled flat engine, and the function of the drum brakes; spare parts are available through specialist Citroën classic-car dealers and clubs.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.

  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
