The Citroën Ami was introduced in 1961 as the Ami 6, based on the 2CV, and replaced in 1969 by the Ami 8 with reworked bodywork; Break denotes the estate version, Service the more simply equipped van version without a rear bench seat for light goods transport. The air-cooled flat-twin engine of the Ami 6 and Ami 8 came in different displacements across versions; the Ami Super, introduced in 1972, took over the flat-four engine from the Citroën GS.
