The 9200er series from Case IH includes the 9230. Production: 1990–1995. The engine delivers 235 hp (172.8 kW), has 6 cylinders, with a displacement of 8,268 cm³. Torque is 852 Nm. Rated speed is 2,200 rpm. The machine is 6,410 mm long, 3,035 mm wide and 3,279 mm high. The unladen weight is 10,935 kg. The wheelbase measures 3,058 mm. Ground clearance is 280 mm. Top speed is 30 km/h. The tank holds 435 litres. Transmission: 12 V/3 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 18.4-38 AS, rear 18.4-38 AS. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 114 mm. The stroke is 135 mm. The compression ratio is 16.5:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,800 rpm. Construction: articulated frame. The gearbox offers 12 forward gears. There are also 3 reverse gears. Injection pressure is 205 bar. The linkage is category III. The 9200 er-Baureihe series covers 6 models. Rated output within it ranges from 235 to 380 hp; the 9230 sits at the bottom of that range with 235 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 9250 above it with 300 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 10,935 to 15,728 kg; here the 9230 sits at the bottom of that range with 10,935 kg. 1222 Case IH models across 76 series are on record.

Case IH 9200 series (1990–1995) – the second Steiger generation under Case IH from Fargo: 9230 to 9280, the last digits as power step, wheeled and Quadtrac versions, Cummins and Case six-cylinders of 8.3 and 10 litres

The 9200 series was the second articulated-tractor generation Case IH built at the Fargo plant in North Dakota after the takeover of Steiger in 1986 – the successor to the 9100s of 1987 and the range in which the first four-track tractor went into series production in 1996 with the 9370 Quadtrac. The type logic: 92 marks the range, the last two digits the power step – 9230 about 235 hp, 9250 about 275, 9270 about 335, 9280 about 375 hp – the versions comprise wheeled articulated tractors on duals or triples and, in the late range, the Quadtrac. The engines are the Case six-cylinder 6TA-830 of 8.3 litres in the small and the Cummins N14 and Case-Cummins 6TA-1000 of 10 litres in the big models, at 2,100 to 2,200 rpm; the transmission is the 12- or 24-speed powershift, optionally the synchromesh gearbox.

The register lists 6 versions with 172.8 to 279.5 kW from six-cylinders of 8,268 to 10,016 cm³, torque up to 1,324 Nm, unladen weights from 10,935 to 15,728 kg, lengths from 6,410 to 7,610 mm, widths from 2,661 to 4,005 mm and heights from 3,198 to 3,870 mm.

The 9200s are the tractors with which Case IH held the prairie articulated-tractor market against John Deere and Versatile; in 1996 the 9300 series followed with the Quadtrac in series production, in 2000 the STX.

On used tractors, operating hours, engine (Cummins and Case parts available), powershift (clutch packs, electronics), articulation joint and steering cylinders, axles and tyres, hydraulics count; parts run through CNH and Cummins.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
