Bolinder-Munktell – other models: collective page of Swedish tractors outside the named ranges, from the Victor and Buster to the Boxer, Terrier and Bison, 16.9 to 51.5 kW, Bolinders and Volvo engines

This page gathers the Bolinder-Munktell tractors the register could not assign to a named range, with the animal-named ranges Victor, Buster, Boxer, Terrier and Bison. Munktells of Eskilstuna built the first tractor made in Sweden in 1913 and merged in 1932 with the engine maker J & C.O. Bolinder to form Bolinder-Munktell; in 1950 the company became part of the Volvo group and traded from then on as Volvo BM. The BM numbers such as the BM-15 or BM-24 denote early internal types, while the later T numbers such as the T 650 or T 800 refer to the post-war models.

The register lists here 36 versions with 16.9 to 51.5 kW from two- to six-cylinder engines of 1,414 to 5,312 cm³, unladen weights of 1,225 to 3,405 kg, lengths of 2,550 to 3,570 mm, widths of 1,600 to 1,900 mm and heights of 1,400 to 2,500 mm; torque ranges from 97 to 304 Nm. Engines came from Bolinders, Volvo and Perkins; besides diesel, petrol and, for wartime reasons, wood gas are also recorded as fuel.

Until its merger with Volvo, Bolinder-Munktell was one of the most significant Swedish tractor makers, and its rugged designs laid the technical foundation for the later Volvo BM and Valmet-Valtra tractor line.

When buying one of these decades-old machines used, rust on the frame and mudguards, the condition of the cooling system and head gasket, and on the petrol and wood-gas models the ignition system all matter. Parts can be found through Swedish and Scandinavian vintage-vehicle specialists and partly through later Volvo BM stock.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
