Allis-Chalmers D series (1957–1969) – the orange tractors from Milwaukee and La Porte: D-10 to D-21, the number as size class, petrol, LPG and diesel, Power Director and Traction Booster
The D series was Allis-Chalmers' programme of the late 1950s and 1960s – the tractors that replaced the letter models WD and CA and with which the maker from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, loaded its West Allis works and the La Porte, Indiana, tractor plant. The type logic: D marks the range, the number orders the size in ascending order – D-10 and D-12 the small one- and two-row tractors, D-14 and D-15 the mid-range, D-17 the best seller at about 50 hp, D-19 of 1961 the first production tractor with a turbodiesel, D-21 of 1963 the first Allis-Chalmers over 100 hp with the six-cylinder of 7.0 litres. The fuels were a matter of choice: petrol, LPG and diesel, as the register entries show; the transmissions carried the Power Director, a two-speed powershift with hand lever, and the hydraulics the Traction Booster, which transfers weight from the implement to the rear wheels.
