The stroke is 98.43 mm. The compression ratio is 7.75:1. Construction: frame construction. Around 4.201 units were built. The D-Baureihe series covers 7 models. Rated output within it ranges from 23.9 to 117 hp; the D-12 sits at the bottom of that range with 23.9 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the D-10 above it with 26 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,297 to 4,874 kg; here the D-12 sits at the bottom of that range with 1,336 kg. 220 Allis Chalmers models across 18 series are on record.

Allis-Chalmers D series (1957–1969) – the orange tractors from Milwaukee and La Porte: D-10 to D-21, the number as size class, petrol, LPG and diesel, Power Director and Traction Booster

The D series was Allis-Chalmers' programme of the late 1950s and 1960s – the tractors that replaced the letter models WD and CA and with which the maker from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, loaded its West Allis works and the La Porte, Indiana, tractor plant. The type logic: D marks the range, the number orders the size in ascending order – D-10 and D-12 the small one- and two-row tractors, D-14 and D-15 the mid-range, D-17 the best seller at about 50 hp, D-19 of 1961 the first production tractor with a turbodiesel, D-21 of 1963 the first Allis-Chalmers over 100 hp with the six-cylinder of 7.0 litres. The fuels were a matter of choice: petrol, LPG and diesel, as the register entries show; the transmissions carried the Power Director, a two-speed powershift with hand lever, and the hydraulics the Traction Booster, which transfers weight from the implement to the rear wheels.

The register lists 7 versions with 17.6 to 86.1 kW from four- and six-cylinders of 2,273 to 6,974 cm³ at 1,650 to 2,200 rpm, unladen weights from 1,297 to 4,874 kg, lengths from 3,061 to 4,079 mm, widths from 1,575 to 2,327 mm and heights from 1,419 to 2,708 mm.

The D series is the most-collected Allis-Chalmers generation; the D-17 was built in over 60,000 units, and the range passed into the 100s (170, 180, 190) in 1964.

On used tractors, originality, engine condition and carburettor or injection, Power Director (clutch pack), gearbox, Traction Booster hydraulics and sheet metal count; parts run through collector dealers in North America.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
