Within the Field Boss programme launched in 1974, the 2-series was the best-selling row-crop class: the 2-135 and 2-155 models stayed in production longer than any other White tractor of that period.

The register lists 11 live models, from the 2-70 to the 4-210, built between 1974 and 1983. Output ranges from 52.2 to 156.7 kW, or 71 to 213 hp, weight from 3,915 to 10,766 kg, displacement from 4,639 to 10,425 cm3, across six- and eight-cylinder engines.

The parallel 4-series, with drive to equal-sized axles — such as the 4-150 and 4-210 — added articulated tractors to the programme for especially heavy drawbar work.

As a direct continuation of the Field Boss concept, this series forms the core of White's North American field-tractor programme of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

As row-crop tractors, the 2-series models have a rear axle with adjustable track width, letting the wheel spacing be matched to different row spacings for maize; a feature the heavier, articulated 4-series models with their equal-sized axles neither have nor need, since they are built more for heavy drawbar work than for row-crop farming. When buying used, it is worth checking the track-width adjuster on the axle stub shafts, since after many years of standing outdoors it often seizes solid with dirt and surface rust.
