The F16 was Volvo's most powerful cab-over model of its time, named after the 16.1-litre six-cylinder diesel, which the register records with exactly that displacement of 16,120 cm³. As with the F10, the 6X2 suffix marks the axle configuration with a non-driven third axle, and the number pairs such as 4600+1350 in the register's designations give the wheelbase and overhang in millimetres.

The register lists here 5 versions with an output of 342 kW from the 16,120 cm³ six-cylinder, unladen weights from 9,030 to 18,825 kg, gross weights from 25,500 to 26,000 kg, lengths from 6,960 to 10,125 mm and widths from 2,500 to 2,600 mm.

As the most powerful cab-over chassis of its day, the F16 was built for abnormal loads, long-haul tractor units and demanding trailer work. Rivals included Scania's 142 series and the heaviest MAN and Mercedes-Benz models, and the high torque called for a reinforced clutch and a gearbox matched to heavy combinations.

On a used F16, the turbocharger and injection system of the large six-cylinder deserve particular attention, along with the clutch and gearbox given the high torque, and frame corrosion and the condition of the air suspension. Parts for the engine and drivetrain remain well available through Volvo Trucks, including for examples still working in abnormal-load haulage.
