Volvo is a Swedish car maker with its main plant in Torslanda near Gothenburg. The Volvo 200 was styled by Jan Wilsgaard, who as Volvo's chief designer shaped several model generations over the decades, including the 140, whose successor the 200 was.

The register lists the 200 as a range built from 1974 to 1993, with a front engine and rear-wheel drive. It was offered as a two-door coupé, two- and four-door saloon and five-door estate, with engines from the four-cylinder B17 to B230 series through the PRV V6 to five- and six-cylinder diesel versions of 2.0 and 2.4 litres. As an estate the car weighed around 1,421 kg (3,132 lb) between 1986 and 1991, the saloon around 1,371 kg (3,022 lb).
The Volvo 200 was built not only at the home plant in Torslanda but also at Halifax in Canada, Ghent in Belgium, Melbourne in Australia and Turin in Italy, an unusually wide network of assembly plants for a manufacturer of this size. The 700 series was planned as its successor, but the 200 was actually replaced by the Volvo 850, which introduced a completely new front-wheel-drive technical base.
Buying a Volvo 200 second-hand, rust on the wheel arches, sills and around the rear shock-absorber mounts matters most, a known weak point of these model years. On the diesel versions the injection pump needs professional adjustment, on the PRV V6 models the timing belt and water pump need regular checking, and parts supply for most wearing components remains good thanks to the long production run and high numbers built.
