The 04 range from Valmet, dating from the 1980s, comprises the models 504 and 604 in the register, the latter also available in a turbocharged Turbo version; they were built at the Finnish plant in Suolahti. The model numbers rank the range by power class, and the -4 suffix denotes the four-wheel-drive variant. With the optional turbocharging on the 604, the range relied on comparatively modern technology for its time. That extra output made a real difference when pulling heavier implements.

The register lists 3 versions with 36.8 to 48.5 kW from three-cylinder diesel engines of 2,685 to 3,298 cm³, unladen weights of 2,690 to 2,820 kg, a length of 3,617 mm, widths of 1,890 to 1,930 mm and heights of 2,500 to 2,554 mm; torque ranges from 170 to 235 Nm at a rated speed of 2,300 rpm.
Turbocharging the more powerful 604 was, for a Finnish tractor of the period, an early step toward more power from relatively small displacement, helping it keep pace with rivals' larger six-cylinder models; the 04 range covered the mid power segment on Nordic farms.
When buying used, on the Turbo version particularly the condition of the turbocharger and charge-air ducting matters, and on all models the injection pump, cooling, gearbox and clutch; spare parts are available through today's Valtra network and independent farm-machinery dealers.
