For the Big Thumb, the register lists several six-cylinder diesel engines from the RF8, RG8, RH8, RH10, GE13 and MD92 families, without individual figures such as displacement or output. Transmissions on offer included a seven-speed manual as well as semi-automatic and automatic systems with up to 12 gears, among them UD's own ESCOT automated gearboxes.

As a lorry with no fixed weight class in the register, the Big Thumb covered the medium-heavy to heavy segment in Japan, comparable in Europe to EU classes N2 and N3. The wide range of engine and gearbox variants reflects the fact that the series was offered over 14 years for bodywork ranging from distribution vehicles to long-haul lorries.

Buying a Big Thumb of this era second-hand, it first pays to establish which of the named six-cylinder engines is actually fitted, since service intervals and spare parts differ between the engine families. On the semi-automatic ESCOT gearboxes, the clutch actuation should be checked for fault codes, and as with any Japanese import of this age, checking the frame for corrosion is worthwhile, especially if the vehicle previously worked in a climate where roads are salted in winter.
