Renault began building farm machinery as early as the 1920s and, from the 1950s, built the N series at its Le Mans plant, the numbered successor to the brand's first post-war tractors. The models N 31, N 70, N 71, N 72 and N 73 cover the small to medium power class of those years, with two- to four-cylinder engines; some of the units came from the German engine maker MWM, including the AKD 112 Z.

In the 1950s Renault was, alongside Someca, SFV and the big international brands, one of the French suppliers of farm equipment during the rebuilding of agriculture; the N series served small to medium-sized farms, before later ranges from the maker followed.

On these tractors, what counts today is above all the condition of the bodywork and mudguards, the condition of radiator and cylinder-head gasket on the older two-cylinders, the working order of the mechanical brakes and steering, and the originality of the data plate and paintwork; parts for these early models can mostly still be found only through collectors and specialist vintage-parts dealers.
