Top speed is 25 km/h. Transmission: 6V/1R or 10V/2R. The engine is air-cooled. Tyres: front 5.50-16 ASF, rear 11-28 AS. The model was built in France. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 98 mm. The stroke is 120 mm. The compression ratio is 19.5:1. The engine fitted is the AKD 112 Z. The gearbox offers 10 forward gears. There are also 2 reverse gears. Injection pressure is 150 bar. The linkage is category 3 points - cat. 1. Around 21.961 units were built. The N-Baureihe series covers 5 models. Rated output within it ranges from 16 to 40 hp; the N 72 sits in the lower part of that range with 24.7 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the N 73 below it with 16 hp and the N 71 above it with 34.5 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,045 to 1,695 kg; here the N 72 sits in the upper part of that range with 1,580 kg. 3632 Renault models across 98 series are on record.

Renault N series tractors from Le Mans in the 1950s: N 31 to N 73, two- to four-cylinder engines of 1,400 to 2,715 cc, 12 to 29 kW, MWM diesels and one petrol engine

Renault began building farm machinery as early as the 1920s and, from the 1950s, built the N series at its Le Mans plant, the numbered successor to the brand's first post-war tractors. The models N 31, N 70, N 71, N 72 and N 73 cover the small to medium power class of those years, with two- to four-cylinder engines; some of the units came from the German engine maker MWM, including the AKD 112 Z.

The register lists here 5 versions with 11.8 to 29.4 kW from two- to four-cylinders of 1,400 to 2,715 cc, unladen weights from 1,045 to 1,695 kg, lengths from 2,720 to 3,130 mm and widths from 1,500 to 1,570 mm at a rated speed of 2,000 rpm. Four of the models run on diesel, one on petrol.

In the 1950s Renault was, alongside Someca, SFV and the big international brands, one of the French suppliers of farm equipment during the rebuilding of agriculture; the N series served small to medium-sized farms, before later ranges from the maker followed.

On these tractors, what counts today is above all the condition of the bodywork and mudguards, the condition of radiator and cylinder-head gasket on the older two-cylinders, the working order of the mechanical brakes and steering, and the originality of the data plate and paintwork; parts for these early models can mostly still be found only through collectors and specialist vintage-parts dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
