With widths of nearly 3 metres and gross weights up to 51 tonnes, the vehicles exceed the usual standard semi-trailer dimensions and sit in the range of special and heavy-haul transport, for instance for construction machinery, precast concrete parts or wind-turbine components; such low-loader trailers are used in European heavy transport alongside standard semi-trailers and are mostly operated under special permit.

When buying used, low-loaders call for checking the condition and tightness of the hydraulics for extendable or lowerable load platforms, the condition of the chassis and main beams under high point loads, axles, steering axles and braking system, and rust on loading ramps and the deck; parts for axles and hydraulics run through the usual commercial-vehicle suppliers such as BPW, SAF and Hyva.
