Trailers of this light weight class are towed day to day in farming and trade work behind cars and light commercial vehicles, for carrying tools, livestock or small equipment; the narrow ratio of unladen to gross weight points to a comparatively large payload reserve.

Class O2 trailers can still be towed on a category B licence in most European countries, provided the combined train weight stays under the national limit, and are usually towed on a ball coupling with a mechanical overrun brake. With six wheels these are three-axle units, as used on long, light trailers for boats or bulky loads to add stability at higher speed.

On a used purchase, the condition of the drawbar and overrun brake, corrosion on the chassis and side boards, tyre condition and, on tipping trailers, the tightness of the load bed all count; spare parts run through the open trailer-parts trade.
