Curtainside semi-trailers of this kind are widespread in European general freight, since the side-opening tarpaulin allows loading and unloading by forklift from either side; Scandinavian road haulage also commonly runs combinations at a higher gross weight than the rest of Europe, which may account for the upper end of this range. Fleet operators favour the type because a single trailer can serve pallet freight, timber and mixed loads alike.

When buying used, check the curtainsider tarpaulin for tears and tension, the roof sheet and bows, the load rails and lashing rings along the sides, the axle assemblies and brake system, and the frame for distortion. The kingpin and fifth-wheel plate need particularly careful checking given the high gross vehicle weights involved, as do the tyres, which wear faster under these loads than in ordinary service.
