The MCW Metrobus shaped scheduled services in Britain's big cities, London in particular, for decades as a double-decker with front-engine alternatives and a rear-engine layout; MCW also supplied coach operators and Commonwealth export markets.

On these British buses, rust on the self-supporting all-steel body, the condition of the engine and gearbox (mostly Gardner or Leyland units), the braking system and door control, and, on double-deckers, the condition of the upper deck and the staircase structure all count; spare parts today run almost exclusively through classic-bus specialists.

Under today's classification, these buses, with a gross weight of 8,000 to 16,256 kg, would fall entirely into bus class M3 (over 5 t); in practice, surviving examples mostly run on historic-vehicle plates today and are therefore exempt from the tachograph and toll obligations that apply to the commercial scheduled operation of modern buses in this weight class.
