Cryogenic tank semi-trailers supply industrial plants, hospitals and building sites with liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen or liquid argon; the aluminium build lowers unladen weight compared with steel tanks and so raises the permitted payload at the same combination gross weight. Operating such tanks requires ADR approval and trained drivers, since this counts as the carriage of dangerous goods.

On a used cryogenic tanker, the test history of the pressure vessel and safety valves, the condition of the vacuum or perlite insulation, the tightness of fittings and valves, and the chassis, axles and brakes all count above all; missing tank test documentation is a reason to walk away. The ADR markings and the paperwork for the carriage of dangerous goods should also be checked before buying.
