Lanz HN 5 series – the D 6515: a multi-fuel single-cylinder engine producing 35 hp, a low overall height of 1,595 mm and a 3,640 kg weight from the early 1930s
Lanz, in full Heinrich Lanz AG, was based in Mannheim. The D 6515 of the HN 5 series was built from 1929 to 1935, placing it in the same era as the company's early Bulldog series, with which it shares thermosyphon-cooled, multi-fuel single-cylinder technology.

The D 6515 runs a thermosyphon-cooled single-cylinder engine on multiple fuels and produces 35 hp at 540 rpm. The machine weighs 3,640 kg, reaches 16 km/h, and with an overall height of only 1,595 mm against a length of 3,130 mm and a width of 1,945 mm, it sits strikingly low, a trait typical of the early horizontal Lanz engines.
The low overall height results from the horizontally mounted single-cylinder engine, which keeps the machine's centre of gravity low and improves stability on uneven ground. Multi-fuel capability allowed the engine to run on a range of fuels, including lower-grade ones, while the low speed of 540 rpm combined with a large flywheel delivered a high, even torque for heavy draught work.
When buying such an old multi-fuel single-cylinder engine, the condition of the pre-combustion chamber and ignition arrangement matters, since matching spare parts are barely available new any more. The thermosyphon cooling needs an undisturbed, deposit-free circuit, and the flywheel, clutch and frame should be checked for cracks after decades of possible use.
