Boat trailers of this type serve owners of sailing and motor boats, clubs and boatyards who move their boats between mooring, yard and regatta venue; being matched to particular boat classes such as the Soling sets such special-purpose trailers apart from general-purpose boat trailers. The focus on particular boat classes also shows in the accessories, such as roller sets matched precisely to specific hull shapes.

On a used purchase, boat trailers call in particular for the condition of the wheel bearings, which need to withstand wet running when launching, the condition and adjustment of the keel roller or support and the winch, corrosion on the galvanised frame and, where fitted, the operation of the braking system.
