J. Bautz AG was a tractor manufacturer from southern Germany, based in Saulgau in Württemberg, that built simple, rugged single-cylinder diesel tractors in the early post-war years. The AS line stood for this basic configuration. With its thermosiphon cooling and no water pump, the B 14 AS is technically typical of the simple, low-maintenance single-cylinder engines of the period.

The single-cylinder engine of 1,022 cc produces 10.5 kW (14 hp) at 1,500 rpm and drives the tractor to a top speed of 18 km/h. At a weight of 1,150 kg, a wheelbase of 1,445 mm and a width of 1,520 mm, this is a small, compact field tractor for medium-sized holdings.

Single-cylinder diesel tractors with thermosiphon cooling were considered especially reliable, since they lacked the failure-prone water pump; cooling relies solely on the natural circulation of heated coolant. That made them attractive to farms with little workshop time to spare. The low top speed of 18 km/h places the B 14 AS firmly in the slow tractor category capped at 40 km/h.

Buying a used B 14 AS means checking the cooling circuit above all, since thermosiphon cooling overheats quickly once scale builds up or channels clog. The crankshaft bearings and injection pump of such an old single-cylinder unit should be inspected, along with rust in the sheet metal. Parts for these early Bautz models today come only from a handful of collectors and specialists.
