Heinrich Lanz of Mannheim built its Bulldog tractors with single-cylinder hot-bulb engines that, depending on availability, could run on crude oil, benzole or paraffin. In the early 1930s the HR 5c series was one of the manufacturer's mid-range power classes.

The D 6520 is powered by a water-cooled single-cylinder engine that runs at either 540 or 630 rpm, producing 30 hp, or 22 kW. At a weight of 3,380 kg, a length of 3,130 mm, a height of 1,595 mm, a width of 1,945 mm and a wheelbase of 1,864 mm, the machine reaches a top speed of 16.6 km/h.

The two usable engine speeds allowed a choice between the standardised PTO speed of 540 rpm for driven implements and a higher speed for pure pulling work. A single cylinder of this displacement ran correspondingly slowly but with high torque, typical of the heavy field work of the period. Such a slow-turning single cylinder also ran steadily under partial load for extended ploughing sessions, a common demand in daily farm use.

When buying, the condition of the hot bulb and cylinder bore matters, as these parts were particularly stressed by multi-fuel operation, along with the radiator and water pump for leaks. The gearbox and clutch should be checked for noise and the frame for rust; spare parts for this series are now only available through a specialist circle of collectors.
