The D 9500 is powered by a multi-fuel single-cylinder engine with thermosiphon cooling, producing 38 hp at a rated speed of 540 to 630 rpm. At a weight of 3,300 kg, a length of 3,440 mm, a height of 2,315 mm and a width of 1,820 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,036 mm, the machine is a heavy tractor whose top speed of 6.2 km/h was built purely for draft work.

Thermosiphon cooling relies solely on the natural circulation of heated water between the engine and the radiator, without a water pump as an additional, wear-prone component, but it only works reliably with sufficiently wide pipes and a free flow of air. The multi-fuel engine could run, depending on availability, on crude oil, diesel fuel and similar heavy fuels, making the machine independent of any single fuel type.

When buying a D 9500, the condition of the radiator pipes and the radiator itself matters, since thermosiphon cooling depends on unobstructed flow, along with the hot bulb and its preheating device. Also worth checking are the clutch and gearbox for wear noises and the brakes; parts for this older Lanz Bulldog are usually still obtainable from specialist suppliers.
