Hatz, the Motorenfabrik Hatz headquartered in Ruhstorf an der Rott in Lower Bavaria, is known chiefly as a maker of air-cooled diesel engines for construction machinery, compressors and agricultural equipment, and in the 1950s and 1960s also built small tractors of the T range under its own name, powered by its own Hatz diesel engines. The type designations T-13 to T-32 follow the approximate power class of the respective engine in horsepower.

The Hatz T tractors were designed as simple, sturdy small tractors for smaller farms and special applications, in a market segment served in post-war Germany by numerous smaller manufacturers alongside major brands such as Fendt, Deutz and Normag; the in-house Hatz diesel engines were a distinguishing feature against competitors that relied on bought-in engines.
On a used Hatz T-range tractor, the condition of the air-cooled single- or twin-cylinder diesel engine, particularly the cooling fins and blower, rust on the frame and mudguards, and the tightness of the gearbox and axles all count; engine parts are partly available through the still-operating Hatz works in Ruhstorf, while vehicle parts are only available through specialist dealers.
