The Brillant series replaced part of Hanomag's older R series in the early 1960s and was built until 1971, documented in the register from 1962 to 1970. Output of the recorded models ranges from 37 to 55 kW, with models rated in horsepower from 50 to 75 hp, using four- and six-cylinder engines with displacement from 2,798 to 4,252 cm³.

The Brillant series was one of Hanomag's last standalone lines before the agricultural machinery business passed to Massey Ferguson in 1971. For a used model, the exact engine matters most, as four- and six-cylinder versions were offered in parallel within the series.

With a power range up to 55 kW, the Brillant series sat at the upper edge of the class intended for three-point category I under ISO 730; the most powerful six-cylinder models already approached category II. As the Hanomag tractor brand has not existed since 1971, original parts for the Brillant series are scarce and are mainly sourced through specialist vintage-machinery dealers and reproduction parts.
