The span from 800 kg to 36 tonnes gross weight shows a range running from the simple car trailer to the semi-trailer for heavy-duty traffic; the smaller types serve as multi-purpose trailers, the heavy versions carry building materials, machinery or general cargo. The range thus covers everyday private and commercial use as well as professional long-haul transport.

On a used trailer, the smaller types call for checking the frame, drawbar, ball coupling and brakes, the heavy versions also the axles, air suspension, kingpin and landing legs; rust on load-bearing parts is the most common fault across the range. On the larger semi-trailers, it is also worth checking the brake discs or drums and even tyre wear. Spare parts are supplied by the general trailer and commercial-vehicle trade.
