The R in Fiat's type designation stands for ruote, wheels – the counterpart to the C of the crawlers – and the R series gathers the wheeled tractors with which Fiat Trattori motorised Italian agriculture from the early 1950s to the Nastro d'Oro of 1968. The 25 R of 1951 founded the post-war range, the 55 R followed in 1955 as the four-cylinder mid-range, the 18 R 'La Piccola' of 1957 was the small tractor for farms of a few hectares, and the three-digit 211 R, 312 R, 342 R and 513 R of 1958 to 1968 formed the generation that made Fiat Italy's largest tractor maker. The type logic: on the two-digit types the number gives the output in hp, on the three-digit ones the first digit the cylinder count and the following ones the hp in Fiat's reckoning – 211 R a two-cylinder, 513 R a four-cylinder of the upper class – and (A) marks four-wheel drive.

The register lists 10 versions with 14 to 61.8 kW, 1,135 to 6,872 cm³ with two to four cylinders, torque from 63 to 412 Nm, unladen weights from 830 to 3,760 kg, lengths from 2,515 to 3,734 mm, widths from 1,203 to 1,990 mm and heights from 1,313 to 1,895 mm; eight models run on diesel, two optionally on petrol.

The R tractors were the tractors of the Italian economic miracle: simple, robust, built under licence in Argentina, Spain and Turkey – the root of the Fiat kinship that reaches to Fiat Concord and Türk Traktör.

Used R Fiats are collector tractors with a lively scene in Italy; when buying, engine condition, gearbox, originality and parts supply, which is good through Italian remanufacturers, are what count.
