The Fiat Trattori 55-R belongs to the R series. Production: 1954–1955. The engine delivers 55 hp (40.1 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 6,546 cm³. Torque is 93 Nm. Rated speed is 1,440 rpm. The machine is 3,690 mm long, 1,990 mm wide and 1,650 mm high. The unladen weight is 3,760 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,240 mm. Ground clearance is 500 mm. Top speed is 20 km/h. Transmission: 5 V/1 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 7.50-18 ASF, rear 14-34 AS. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 122 mm. The stroke is 140 mm. The compression ratio is 21.5:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,500 rpm. Construction: frame construction. The R-Baureihe series covers 10 models. Rated output within it ranges from 19 to 84 hp; the 55-R sits in the middle of that range with 55 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 50-R below it with 50 hp and the 60-R above it with 60 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 830 to 3,760 kg; here the 55-R sits at the top of that range with 3,760 kg. 99 Fiat Trattori models across 9 series are on record.

Fiat R series (1951–1968) – the wheeled tractors before the Nastro d'Oro: R for ruote, 25 R, 55 R, 18 R 'La Piccola', 211 R to 513 R and 80 R, the first digits as hp, 14 to 62 kW

The R in Fiat's type designation stands for ruote, wheels – the counterpart to the C of the crawlers – and the R series gathers the wheeled tractors with which Fiat Trattori motorised Italian agriculture from the early 1950s to the Nastro d'Oro of 1968. The 25 R of 1951 founded the post-war range, the 55 R followed in 1955 as the four-cylinder mid-range, the 18 R 'La Piccola' of 1957 was the small tractor for farms of a few hectares, and the three-digit 211 R, 312 R, 342 R and 513 R of 1958 to 1968 formed the generation that made Fiat Italy's largest tractor maker. The type logic: on the two-digit types the number gives the output in hp, on the three-digit ones the first digit the cylinder count and the following ones the hp in Fiat's reckoning – 211 R a two-cylinder, 513 R a four-cylinder of the upper class – and (A) marks four-wheel drive.

The register lists 10 versions with 14 to 61.8 kW, 1,135 to 6,872 cm³ with two to four cylinders, torque from 63 to 412 Nm, unladen weights from 830 to 3,760 kg, lengths from 2,515 to 3,734 mm, widths from 1,203 to 1,990 mm and heights from 1,313 to 1,895 mm; eight models run on diesel, two optionally on petrol.

The R tractors were the tractors of the Italian economic miracle: simple, robust, built under licence in Argentina, Spain and Turkey – the root of the Fiat kinship that reaches to Fiat Concord and Türk Traktör.

Used R Fiats are collector tractors with a lively scene in Italy; when buying, engine condition, gearbox, originality and parts supply, which is good through Italian remanufacturers, are what count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
