Deutz MTH – the 1930s Cologne farm tractor: MTH 122 to MTH 322, single-cylinder multi-fuel engines running at 600 rpm, 2,600 to 3,000 kg weight
Deutz, descended from the Motorenfabrik Deutz founded in Cologne-Deutz in 1864, brought the MTH range to market in the 1930s as a simple farm tractor for small and medium-sized holdings. This page covers the three versions MTH 122, MTH 222 and MTH 322, whose three-digit type number distinguishes the models within the range. Characteristic of the MTH tractors was the horizontal single-cylinder engine, which ran at low speed and was designed to run on different fuels – a multi-fuel concept that let interwar farmers use whatever fuel was cheapest and available.

The register lists 3 versions here with 10.2 kW or 14 hp rated output from a single cylinder of 2,861 to 3,861 cc displacement, at a constant rated speed of 600 rpm. Kerb weight ranges from 2,600 to 3,000 kg, and PTO output is recorded at 14 hp. Two of the models run on multi-fuel, one on diesel.
Tractors of this type marked the transition from draught animals to motorisation on smaller and medium-sized farms and competed with similarly conceived single-cylinder tractors from other German makers of the period. The slow-running single cylinder delivered high torque with low wear and was robust enough for hard daily field work, even though travel speed remained low.
When buying a used MTH, check the condition of the cylinder head and pistons, the tightness of the fuel system in multi-fuel operation, wear on the crankshaft and bearings, and corrosion on the frame and mudguards after decades of use or storage. Spare parts for these early Deutz ranges are mainly available today through specialist vintage-tractor dealers and tractor clubs; factory support no longer exists.
