Commer, founded in 1905 in Luton and part of the Rootes Group from 1928, built light-to-medium commercial vehicles and was known above all from 1948 for its forward-control Superpoise range; after Chrysler took over Rootes, the Commer brand was dropped in 1976 in favour of Dodge. In Britain, Commer supplied chassis above all to trades and distribution traffic and to bus operators, but could hold its own against Bedford, Ford and Austin mainly with niche products such as the opposed-piston two-stroke TS3 diesel; after the brand ended, the plant and models were absorbed into Chrysler and later Peugeot-Talbot production.

On a used example, rust on the frame and cab – on the rare surviving vehicles usually more advanced than on a Bedford or Ford of the same era –, the condition of the engine and clutch, and the availability of spare parts, which for Commer now runs practically only through specialist club and classic-vehicle dealers, count.
