Case International was the brand name under which Case and International Harvester appeared jointly after their 1985 merger until the mid-1990s, before the brand became Case IH. The 4200 series with the types 4210, 4220 and 4230 covered the mid power class; the designation DT denotes the four-wheel-drive version. The joint brand was meant to signal to customers that the long-established sales and service networks of both companies were retained after the merger.

As general-purpose tractors with four-wheel drive, the 4200 series was designed for mid-sized arable and grassland farms and competed directly with comparable series from Ford, Massey Ferguson and Deutz-Fahr. A synchronised shuttle shift and a cab with reduced noise levels were among the improvements that set the series apart from older Case models.
When buying used, what counts is the operating hours and condition of the four-cylinder diesel, clutch and gearbox, the condition of the four-wheel drive and front axle, and the tightness of the hydraulics; parts now run through the Case IH dealer network.
