The Gravitron was built in 1994 and registered in the Dutch vehicle register. With a gross weight of 32 tonnes and a very high unladen weight of almost 22 tonnes, it belongs to the class of heavy special-purpose trailers, whose own construction claims a large share of the rated weight.

The Gravitron is rated at 32,000 kg gross weight and 21,680 kg unladen weight, with a length of 14.4 m, a width of 2,600 mm and a wheelbase of 10.95 m. The payload is therefore around 10.3 tonnes, while the rated maximum speed is given as 90 km/h, lower than for lighter trailers.

Under EU vehicle classification, a trailer of this weight falls into category O4, far above the 10-tonne threshold, and runs on air brakes rather than the simple overrun brake of lighter trailers. An ordinary car is out of the question as a tow vehicle; a trailer of this class is towed by a heavy goods tractor unit with a category CE licence.

Buying a trailer this heavy second-hand, the condition of the frame and axles for cracks and deformation matters, along with the function of the air-brake system including lines and valves, the condition of the bearings across a wheelbase of almost 11 metres, and the tread depth and age of the tyres. Given the high unladen weight, it is also worth checking load-bearing welds and possible corrosion at stressed points of the frame.
