The HC 44 is powered by an air-cooled single-cylinder engine of 400 cm³ displacement, running on petrol, delivering 11 hp or 8.1 kW at a rated speed of 3,600 rpm. As a single-axle tractor with four-wheel drive, 21x11.0-8 tyres at the front and a weight of 210 kg, the machine reaches a design top speed of 6.8 km/h.
The single-axle tractor transmits its power through two wheels guided by the operator via a drawbar or a seated cart, making it more manoeuvrable and more resistant to tipping on slopes than a four-wheel tractor of the same power. Air cooling makes the engine independent of a water-cooling circuit, saving weight and simplifying use even at an angle; at 6.8 km/h the machine moves only at working pace.
When buying a used Aebi single-axle tractor, the condition of the steering and clutch mechanism at the drawbar and the fins of the air cooler matter, checked for dirt and damage. Tyres, drive chains or shafts, and the mounting of implements should be checked for wear caused by use on slopes, and the engine should be tested cold as well as warm.
