The ZiŁ-164 is a Soviet truck built from 1957 to 1964. It is the modernised continuation of the ZIS-150, recognisable by the vertical bars of the radiator grille. The ZIS-150 had a six-cylinder engine of 5.6 litres rated at 90 hp at 2,400 rpm and a payload of 4,000 kg; the register likewise lists an inline six of 5.6 litres for the ZiŁ-164.

The vehicle is 6,700 mm long, 2,470 mm wide and 2,180 mm high, with a wheelbase of 4,000 mm. Rear-wheel drive and a five-speed manual gearbox make the ZiŁ-164 a classic two-axle truck for road and building-site work; for rough ground the family included the three-axle ZIS-151.

The further revised ZiL-164A was built from 1961 to 1964. The ZIL-130 is regarded as the successor of the ZIS-150 line. As a vehicle of the Khrushchev era the ZiŁ-164 stands for the phase in which Soviet truck building moved from the pre-war ZIS-5 design to new types such as the ZIL-130.

ZIL – other models: the collective page of Soviet trucks outside the named ranges, from the pre-war AMO-F-15 through the ZIL-130 to the all-wheel-drive military truck ZIL-131

This page gathers trucks from ZIL, the Moscow plant Zavod imeni Likhachova, which until its renaming in 1956 after the fall of the Stalin cult traded as ZIS (Zavod imeni Stalina) and before that, founded as AMO, built the AMO-F-15 in 1924, the first series-built Soviet truck. Among the best-known models are the ZIL-130, the most-built Soviet truck from 1964 to 1994, and the ZIL-131, an all-wheel-drive 6x6 military truck. The model names also include Finnish registration terms: "Avolavakuorma-auto (BA)" denotes a flatbed truck, "Umpikorinen (BB)" a truck with an enclosed box body.

The register lists 22 versions with 14.7 to 110 kW from six- to eight-cylinders of 5,550 to 7,800 cm³, unladen weights from 4,000 to 8,200 kg, gross weights from 10,100 to 12,000 kg, lengths from 5,050 to 8,150 mm, widths from 1,760 to 2,550 mm and heights from 2,180 to 2,480 mm.

ZIL trucks shaped road freight in the Soviet Union and its successor states for decades and were exported in large numbers to Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia; the ZIL-131 remained in service with numerous armies long after the end of the Soviet Union.

On these vehicles, the condition of frame and load bed, corrosion on wings and cab, the condition of clutch, gearbox and, on the all-wheel-drive models, the transfer case count, along with the availability of spare parts, today mostly through specialist Eastern European parts trade.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
