Volvo F16 – long-haul chassis with a 16-litre six-cylinder (1987–1993): 475 hp top rating, extended FORLANGD version, gross weights from 18,000 to 25,500 kg

The Volvo F16 was built from 1987 to 1993 as the flagship of the F-series for international long-haul work, with the inline six-cylinder TD161 of around 16.1 litres. The 4X2 axle formula in the model designations gives the number of axles and driven axles, and the suffix FORLANGD is the Swedish word for extended, marking chassis with a longer wheelbase for bodies and semi-trailers.

The register lists 6 versions with up to 349.5 kW from six-cylinder engines of around 16.1 litres. Kerb weights range from 7,375 to 16,680 kg, gross vehicle weights from 18,000 to 25,500 kg. Lengths run from 5,600 to 12,000 mm, widths from 2,520 to 2,550 mm.

As Volvo's most powerful chassis of its time, the F16 competed with the Scania 143 and the Mercedes-Benz 1938; its six-cylinder with high specific output made it the preferred tractor for heavy semi-trailers in international long-haul work.

On a used example, checks should cover corrosion on the frame outriggers and spring brackets, the condition of the fifth-wheel coupling and air suspension on tractor units, and sealing of the charge-air cooler and injection pump on the six-cylinder engine; spare parts are available through Volvo's service network and independent suppliers.

With gross vehicle weights from 18,000 to 25,500 kg, these chassis belong to EU class N3 (over 12 t); operating them requires a category CE driving licence, a tachograph and compliance with driving and rest times. The Euro 0 and Euro 1 emissions standards in force when the F16 was built did not yet call for a particulate filter or SCR catalysis, which were only introduced as standard in much later truck generations.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
