Volvo BM is regarded as the inventor of the articulated hauler: in 1966 the Braås plant in Småland presented the DR 631, popularly 'Gravel Charlie' (Grus-Kalle), a tractor with a trailed body and all-wheel drive through the articulation joint. From that concept grew the A series, still built in Braås today and leading the world market for articulated haulers. The number in the name stands for the payload class in tonnes – A25 about 24 t, A30 about 28 t, A35 about 33 t, A40 about 39 t, A45 about 41 t, the A60H at 55 t since 2016 the world's largest articulated hauler – the letter after it for the generation: C in the 1990s, D from 2000, E from 2007, F from 2010, G from 2014, H on the A60. Suffixes such as 6x6 and 4x4 give the drive, FS the full-suspension version for higher travel speeds on long hauls.

The register lists 23 versions with 187 to 347 kW from Volvo six-cylinders of 6,730 to 16,100 cm³ – from the TD 73 of the C generation via D11 and D13 to the D16 in the A60H – with 1,080 to 2,960 Nm of torque at rated speeds of 1,800 to 2,400 rpm. Lengths run from 9,677 to 12,226 mm, heights from 3,260 to 3,850 mm.
Volvo's hallmarks are drive to all six wheels with engageable differential locks, oscillation of the articulation joint in all planes and the low-mounted transmission – reasons why the A series is regarded as the benchmark in quarries, earthmoving and landfills.
On used haulers, operating hours relative to body care, the condition of articulation joint and oscillation bearings, brakes (wet disc brakes from the D generation) and tyres count; parts supply is secured worldwide through Volvo CE.
