Volkswagen 70X0A – the factory type code of the T4 Transporter (Baumuster 70), including Kampeerwagen conversions and the Carthago motorhome body, 2.0 to 2.5 litres of displacement, four- to five-cylinders

70X0A is Volkswagen's internal factory type code for the T4 Transporter (Baumuster 70), built from 1990 to 2003 in Hanover and, from the late 1990s, also in Poznań, Poland. The collective page shows, alongside standard transporters, motorhome conversions too – visible in the Dutch term Kampeerwagen and in the converter Carthago, which built compact motorhomes on the T4 chassis. The T4 was Volkswagen's first Transporter with a front engine and front-wheel drive, replacing the rear-driven T3.

The register lists here 9 versions with 2.0 to 2.5 litres of displacement from four- to five-cylinders, unladen weights from 1,700 to 2,310 kg, gross weights from 2,500 to 3,300 kg and widths from 1,790 to 2,020 mm.

During its production run the T4 was one of the most widely used bases in Europe for trade, panel-van and motorhome bodies, and its 2.5-litre five-cylinder VR5 turbodiesel shaped a whole generation of transporters; the Kampeerwagen and Carthago entries recorded here represent the second major line of use alongside classic commercial work.

On used examples, rust on the sliding-door tracks, strut mounts and underbody, the condition of the timing belt and water pump, wear on the clutch and automatic transmission on the five-speed automatic versions count, and on the motorhome conversions damp in the furniture and the seal of the roof hatches; drivetrain and body parts are widely available through the open VW parts trade.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
