Schmitz Cargobull S.KO 24 – refrigerated semi-trailer from the Münsterland region: COOL refrigeration unit for food and pharmaceutical transport, unladen weights 5.8 to 12.0 t, gross vehicle weights up to 54 t

Schmitz Cargobull is a commercial vehicle manufacturer from the Münsterland region, based in Altenberge, founded in 1892 as a smithy and today one of the largest trailer builders in Europe. The S.KO range – the name stands for Schmitz Kühlkoffer (refrigerated box) – denotes heat-insulated semi-trailers with a fixed box body for temperature-controlled transport, fitted with its own refrigeration unit under the COOL designation. The number in the type designation (18, 20, 24) orders the build size according to the manufacturer's logic, the letter L marks a lengthened version; the many further suffixes such as FP, V7 or EXPRESS in the model names denote unit, body and equipment variants of individual haulage customers.

The register lists 128 versions with unladen weights of 5,840 to 11,960 kg, permissible gross weights of 22,000 to 54,000 kg, lengths of 11,360 to 17,430 mm and widths of 2,500 to 2,600 mm.

The S.KO reefer is, alongside the curtainsider programme, the second mainstay of Schmitz Cargobull and competes chiefly with Krone and Lamberet for temperature-controlled distribution of food, beverages and pharmaceutical goods across Europe. Unlike the curtainsider, the fixed box body provides an unbroken cold chain and can be fitted with partitions for multi-temperature operation.

On a used reefer, what counts is the condition and operating hours of the refrigeration unit, the seal of roof, doors and insulation panels against moisture ingress, the condition of the tail lift and curtains, plus the brakes and axles; parts for the unit and body are readily available through Schmitz Cargobull's dense service network.

What to check before buying

  • Search the frame and welds at the axle mounts — that is where cracks start.
  • Check the brakes and the last inspection in the papers.
  • Work the gross weight against the towing vehicle before buying.
  • Compare the chassis number with the papers.
  • Look at the floor, cover or body from the inside — rust does not show from outside.
