Its immediate neighbours are the S 350 (S 350 V) below it with 34 hp and the S 650 (S 650 V) above it with 56 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,285 to 3,800 kg; here the S 450 (S 450 V) sits in the lower part of that range with 2,250 kg. 91 Schlüter models across 19 series are on record.

Schlüter S – the Super range between the small AS and the large Euro Trac tractors: 25 to S 900, single- to six-cylinder diesels of 1.5 to 6.5 litres, 11 to 58.6 kW, 1.3 to 3.8 t

The S range – S standing at Schlüter for Super – was the mid-size and large programme of the Munich, and later Freising, engine and tractor maker founded in 1899, positioned between the small AS range and the later large Trac tractors. The span runs from the small single-cylinder model 25 to the large six-cylinder S 900, showing the path Schlüter took from the 1950s into the 1970s towards ever higher power classes.

The register lists 6 versions with 11 to 58.6 kW from single- to six-cylinder diesels of 1,506 to 6,494 cm³ at 1,500 to 1,800 rpm, unladen weights from 1,285 to 3,800 kg, lengths from 2,630 to 4,410 mm, widths from 1,532 to 1,970 mm and heights from 1,500 to 1,925 mm; one version is listed at 25 hp.

The S range accompanied Schlüter's rise from a small Bavarian tractor maker to a supplier of high-power standard tractors, with which the company later competed against Fendt, Deutz and the international large-tractor makers on the way to its own later Trac generation, before the Euro Trac succeeded the range.

On used tractors, both the older small models and the large S 900 versions, engine and injection pump, clutch and gearbox, hydraulics and linkage, brakes and sheet metal and frame for rust count; since Schlüter ended tractor production in 1993, parts now run only through specialists.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
