Scania Vabis – the trucks under the brand's double name before 1969, from the L76 to the BF 7639, four- to six-cylinder engines of 5.2 to 11 litres, gross weights of 10.5 to 21.3 t

This page gathers the trucks still carrying the double name Scania-Vabis – the brand formed in 1911 from the merger of Vagnfabriks Aktiebolaget i Södertälje, Vabis for short, with the Maskinfabriks-Aktiebolaget Scania founded in Malmö in 1900. Until the renaming to plain Scania in 1969, the trucks still carried the letter L for lastbil, the Swedish word for lorry, followed by a model number; types such as the L76, L110S or the BF 7639 denote different wheelbases, cab shapes and engines of the 1940s to 1960s, with S marking a short-bonnet or tractor-unit variant. The plant in Södertälje near Stockholm, which grew out of the Vabis wagon works, remains Scania's headquarters to this day.

The register lists here 16 versions with four- to six-cylinder engines of 5,200 to 11,021 cm³, unladen weights from 4,450 to 9,260 kg, gross weights from 10,500 to 21,300 kg, lengths from 5,650 to 11,700 mm and widths from 2,300 to 2,550 mm.

Scania-Vabis trucks of this era shaped Swedish long-haul and construction-site work of the post-war decades, and with rugged diesel engines and early turbocharging laid the technical foundation for Scania's later reputation as a maker of heavy trucks.

On these historic chassis, the condition of the frame, rust on cab and mudguards, the state of engine and gearbox after decades of standing or use, and parts supply, which for these early model years now runs only through Scania veteran clubs and specialists, count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
