Scania R380 – the 380 hp long-haul truck with high cab: R for the large sleeper cab, 380 as a direct power rating in hp, six-cylinder of 10.6 to 11.7 litres, as tractor unit and flatbed vehicle
Scania, based in Södertälje, has built trucks since 1902 and in 2004 introduced the PGRT range with a type logic in which the number behind the cab letter directly gives the engine output in hp. The letter R stands for the large, tall long-haul cab with full sleeping comfort, as opposed to the lower distribution cab P. The designation R380 thus denotes a truck with around 380 hp engine output; the register lists both tractor-unit versions for semi-trailers and chassis with flatbed or box bodies in various wheel formulas from 4X2 to 6X2.

The register lists here 7 versions with outputs of 279 to 280 kW, six-cylinders of 10,640 to 11,705 cm³, unladen weights of 7,050 to 11,000 kg, a gross vehicle weight of 18,600 to 25,700 kg, lengths of 5,940 to 10,200 mm and widths of 2,450 to 2,600 mm.
The R380 was among the most widely built long-haul trucks of the PGRT generation, sought in European long-distance haulage, where the large R cab allowed drivers multi-day runs with full sleeping comfort.
On a used example, operating hours and mileage of the six-cylinder, the condition of clutch, gearbox and fifth wheel on tractor units, rust on the chassis after years of long-haul use, and brakes, suspension and the long-haul cab fittings all count; parts run through the Scania service network.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
