The LS111 belongs to Scania's first '1-series', which replaced the older L-series in the late 1960s and introduced with it the 11-litre six-cylinder engine that gave the range the number 111 in its type designation. Versions such as S42-6X2 and S46-6X2 further show the axle configuration with a tandem rear axle, while the figures after the slash, such as 4600+1320, give the wheelbase and overhang in millimetres.

With the 11-litre engine and gross weights up to 24.5 tonnes, the LS111 targeted long-haul transport and heavy construction hauling, competing with the Volvo F88 and the heavy MAN ranges of the time. The 6X2 configuration with a steered or liftable tandem axle noticeably increased the permissible payload over two-axle chassis.
On a used LS111, the tandem axle with its steering or lift mechanism deserves particular attention, along with the condition of the clutch and gearbox and corrosion on the frame and leaf-spring mounts. Parts for the 11-litre six-cylinder remain available through the Scania network and specialist commercial-vehicle parts suppliers, even though the range now counts as a classic.
