The Manitou MLA 6-65 H-Z is an articulated loader from the French maker Manitou that, according to the maker, combines small dimensions with high power. Drive comes from a Yanmar engine of the 4TNV98CT series with 48.5 kW (65 hp) and maximum torque at 1,560 rpm.

The hydrostatic transmission has two speed ranges with two forward and two reverse gears each. Z-kinematics on the loader arm give high breakout force and guide the bucket nearly parallel when lifting. The designation H-Z therefore stands for hydrostat and Z-kinematics; the MLA 6-65 sits in the series above the smaller MLA 5-60 H-Z.

Articulated loaders of this class are used on farms, in landscaping, in municipal depots and in building-materials trade. The mix of power and compactness allows work with bucket, pallet fork or bale spike in confined conditions. On articulated loaders of this size the interplay of dead weight, wheelbase and hydraulic output decides which attachments, such as pallet fork, bucket or bale spike, can sensibly be used.

Manitou – telehandlers and rough-terrain forklifts from France

Manitou comes from Ancenis, France. In 1958 Marcel Braud devised the principle of inverting the layout of a farm tractor and adding a lifting mast and hydraulic steering, creating the first all-terrain forklift. The name "Manitou" was chosen to be pronounceable in any language. The first telescopic forklift for construction followed in 1982, an agricultural version in 1989, and in 1993 the MRT 1540 became the company's first rotating telehandler.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
