The Manitou MLA 5-60 H-Z is an articulated loader that Manitou offers as the smallest machine of its range with Z-kinematics of the loader arm. The Z-kinematics provide high breakout forces when the bucket digs into bulk material and act as on a larger wheel loader, without the machine having its dimensions. The figures in the name refer to the series, and the H marks the hydrostatic drive.

The articulated loader does not steer through the wheels but by folding the frame between front and rear sections, which allows a tight turning circle. It is therefore widespread in farming, landscaping and on farmsteads, where it moves silage, manure, soil or gravel and lifts pallets with fork tines.

The equipment includes a two-speed drive and a differential lock that creates traction on loose or wet ground. Used buyers check the articulation joint, lift-arm bearings, quick hitch and hydraulic hoses, since these parts are heavily stressed in service and play quickly leads to failures.

Manitou – telehandlers and rough-terrain forklifts from France

Manitou comes from Ancenis, France. In 1958 Marcel Braud devised the principle of inverting the layout of a farm tractor and adding a lifting mast and hydraulic steering, creating the first all-terrain forklift. The name "Manitou" was chosen to be pronounceable in any language. The first telescopic forklift for construction followed in 1982, an agricultural version in 1989, and in 1993 the MRT 1540 became the company's first rotating telehandler.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
