Liebherr wheeled excavators A 309 to A 954 – from Kirchdorf an der Iller: Litronic, Compact and the generations B and C, 64 to 225 kW
Liebherr has built wheeled excavators since the 1960s at its Kirchdorf an der Iller plant, the company's original works, and is regarded in Europe as the benchmark of this class. At Liebherr the letter A marks the wheeled excavator (R stands for crawler excavator), the number the size class: A 309 to A 316 are the compact models for urban civil engineering, A 900 to A 924 the mid-size handling and earthmoving excavators, A 944 and A 954 the heavy material handlers for scrapyards and ports. Suffixes explain the version: Litronic stands for the electronic engine and hydraulic control Liebherr has advertised since the 1990s, Compact for the short-tail excavator with small tail swing, HD and Heavylift for reinforced booms and higher lift capacities, B and C for the generations.

The register lists 18 versions with 64.1 to 225.2 kW from four- and six-cylinders of 4,000 to 10,001 cm³ – Deutz BF4M 2012 and BF4M 1013 in the compact models, Liebherr's own D 924 and D 934 in the larger ones – at rated speeds of 1,700 to 2,000 rpm and operating weights from 10,600 to 63,000 kg.
Liebherr's hallmarks are in-house manufacture of engines, hydraulic components and slew rings, the offset boom as standard and the material-handling versions with elevating cab – reasons why the A range dominates in recycling and scrap trading.
On used machines, operating hours, play in slew ring and boom bearings, the condition of hydraulic cylinders and swivel joint, tyres and outriggers and, on material handlers, wear at the grab mount and cab riser count.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
