The 60 series brings together John Deere's large tractors of the late 1980s in two body styles: the conventional standard tractors 4560, 4760 and 4960 as successors to the 50 series, and the articulated four-wheel-drive tractors 8560, 8760 and 8960, built at the Waterloo, Iowa plant. The type logic orders the power class ascending in the hundreds digit; the A suffix on the smaller models denotes the version with a driven front axle.

With the 60 series, John Deere covered the entire upper power spectrum - from large standard tractors for North American arable farming to the articulated four-wheel-drive tractors that competed with Case IH's Steiger series and the Versatile models. The 8960, at around 370 horsepower, was for a time John Deere's most powerful production tractor.
