John Deere 60 Series - large tractors 4560 to 8960: conventional six-cylinder engines up to 272 kW alongside the articulated 8560, 8760 and 8960, kerb weights up to 15.9 t
The 60 series brings together John Deere's large tractors of the late 1980s in two body styles: the conventional standard tractors 4560, 4760 and 4960 as successors to the 50 series, and the articulated four-wheel-drive tractors 8560, 8760 and 8960, built at the Waterloo, Iowa plant. The type logic orders the power class ascending in the hundreds digit; the A suffix on the smaller models denotes the version with a driven front axle.

The register lists 6 versions with 125.1 to 272.3 kW from six-cylinder engines of 7,634 to 14,011 cm³, torque of 908 to 945 Nm at 2,100 to 2,200 rpm, kerb weights of 7,185 to 15,925 kg, lengths of 5,420 to 7,266 mm, widths of 2,997 to 3,870 mm and heights of 3,020 to 3,505 mm; every model runs on diesel.
With the 60 series, John Deere covered the entire upper power spectrum - from large standard tractors for North American arable farming to the articulated four-wheel-drive tractors that competed with Case IH's Steiger series and the Versatile models. The 8960, at around 370 horsepower, was for a time John Deere's most powerful production tractor.
On a used example of these large six-cylinder diesels, check the turbocharger and injection pump, the power-shift transmission, on the 8000-series models also the articulation joint with its steering cylinders and four-wheel steering, the hydraulic pump and cylinders, and the large-volume tyres; parts are available through John Deere and specialist used-parts dealers.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
