Iveco AT260SY – the 26-tonne tractor unit with mid-range long-haul cab: AT for Active Time, 260 for the 26-tonne gross weight class, six-cylinders of 8.7 to 11.1 litres, also offered as a natural-gas version

Iveco was formed in 1975 from the merger of the commercial-vehicle divisions of Fiat, OM and Lancia with the French maker Unic and the German Magirus-Deutz into the Industrial Vehicles Corporation, based in Turin. The AT260SY range belongs to the Stralis/Trakker family: AT stands for Active Time, the mid-range long-haul cab with one bunk, between AD (Active Day, day cab) and AS (Active Space, large flat-floor cab). The number 260 gives the gross weight class of around 26 tonnes, common for tractor units in distribution and regional long-haul transport. Alongside diesel versions, the register also lists a natural-gas variant (CNG), which Iveco offered for lower-emission regional transport.

The register lists here 7 versions with outputs of 265 to 353 kW, six-cylinders of 8,710 to 11,120 cm³, unladen weights of 10,056 to 18,685 kg, a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 to 36,000 kg, lengths of 8,165 to 11,300 mm and widths of 2,550 to 2,600 mm.

The AT260SY served as a tractor unit with 26-tonne registration for regional long-haul transport, and in the higher gross-weight versions also for towing drawbar combinations in heavy haulage.

On a used example, operating hours and mileage of the six-cylinder, the condition of clutch, gearbox and fifth wheel, on the CNG versions also the gas tanks and their inspection intervals, rust on the chassis, and brakes and suspension after years of long-haul use all count; parts run through the Iveco service network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
