Iveco AD190S – the 19-tonner with day cab: AD for Active Day, 190 for the 19-tonne gross weight class, six-cylinders of 8.3 to 11.1 litres, also offered as a natural-gas version for distribution traffic

Iveco was formed in 1975 from the merger of the commercial-vehicle divisions of Fiat, OM and Lancia with the French maker Unic and the German Magirus-Deutz into the Industrial Vehicles Corporation, based in Turin. The AD190S range belongs to the Stralis/Trakker family with its three cab lines: AD stands for Active Day, the low day cab without a bunk, AT for Active Time with one bunk and AS for Active Space as the large flat-floor long-haul cab. The number 190 in the type designation gives the gross weight class of around 19 tonnes, the letter S the corresponding chassis version. Alongside diesel engines, the register also lists natural-gas variants (CNG), which Iveco offered early on for inner-city distribution traffic and refuse vehicles, where the day cab suffices because the vehicles return to the depot daily.

The register lists here 7 versions with outputs of 228 to 294 kW, six-cylinders of 8,250 to 11,120 cm³, unladen weights of 8,314 to 14,145 kg, a gross vehicle weight of 19,500 to 20,500 kg, lengths of 6,300 to 10,850 mm and widths of 2,500 to 2,600 mm.

The AD190S served as a distribution truck with day cab for municipalities, waste operators and regional haulage, where the daily return to depot makes a sleeper cab unnecessary and the compact cab eases access to narrow streets and yards.

On a used example, rust on the frame, cab mounts and body bolted connections, the condition of clutch and gearbox under daily stop-and-go operation, on the CNG versions also the tanks and their inspection intervals, and brakes and suspension all count; parts run through the Iveco service network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
