In the 1990s and 2000s Ingersoll-Rand ran, alongside rollers, compressors and Bobcat compact loaders, telehandlers for North American building construction – the VR range, which lifts pallets, roof trusses and masonry to storey height on sites. The type logic is the American convention of the class: VR stands for Vertical Reach, the first digits give the capacity in thousand pounds, the last the lift height in feet – a VR518 lifts 5,000 lb to 18 ft, a VR642 6,000 lb to 42 ft, a VR1056 10,000 lb to 56 ft – C marks the generation; the 8L is an older model with a different logic. The engines are Cummins QSB4.5 of 4.5 litres and Perkins 1004 and 1104 of 4.0 and 4.4 litres, mounted transversely in the frame as the layout with the driver seated beside the boom requires.

With the sale of the construction divisions – Bobcat and compact equipment to Doosan in 2007, road machinery to Volvo – the Ingersoll-Rand programme ended; the VR telehandlers were continued from 2007 under the Doosan name and then Bobcat. In Europe they are rare.
